Between 1982 and 1992, fourty three children with encephalocele were treated in our department. In nine infants, encephaloceles were found in uncommon localizations; four frontoethmoidal, two basal, two interpariatal and one anterior fontanel. All nine patients were treated surgically. There was no operative mortality in this group. Computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging techniques were very useful for clear identification of the bony defects and determining associated brain malformations.
