The incubation and UV absorbance methods are compared with regards to determination of the N-supplying capability of soils. In this pot experiment conducted with 15 soils and three replicates, sunflower was used as a test plant and 15N enriched (3.6% atom excess) urea was applied to the soils at the rate of 0-100 ppm N. The UV absorbance value obtained at 205 and 220 nm with 0.01 M NaHCO3 extract correlates more with "A' values (respectively, r=0.820** and 0.840**) and other biological indexes (the amount of N in the plants to which had been applied urea derived from the soil "mgN/kg soil', relative yield "%', dry matter yield "grDM/pt', and uptake N "mgN/kg' in the controls pots "No'). -from English summary
