Özet

The perceptions of the meaning of organic hazelnut production in the Black Sea Region of Turkey are described in this paper. The factors that influenced producers to adopt, reject or discontinue organic hazelnut production were examined. The perception of the meaning of organic hazelnut production was different between organic and conventional hazelnut producers. Economic motivation such as the premium prices and market guarantees for organic products given by the marketing company was the most important factor for converting to organic. The producers. perception about potential production problems was the main barrier to conversion. Some producers discontinued organic hazelnut production due to production problems that they faced and because of conflict with the company. The findings of this study are useful for policy makers, the extension service, farmer organizations and private companies in planning, implementing and developing organic production projects in Turkey and other countries with relatively similar conditions.
