Özet

Background: Meeting immigrants’ healthcare needs, which have been increasing in parallel with the rapid increase in their numbers, affects the delivery of healthcare needs negatively. Objectives: This study was conducted to find out nurses’ problems while caring for immigrants and their suggestions for solutions. Methods: The sample of this descriptive study consists of 339 nurses working in a hospital in Black Sea Region. A questionnaire form prepared by the researchers in line with literature was used in data collection. The data were analysed with descriptive statistics, Kruskal Wallis, Mann Whitney U and Spearman correlation test by using SPSS 22 program. Results: In the study, it was found that 87.9% of the nurses had previously provided care for an immigrant and 90.6% had difficulties in care. It was found that nurses felt moderately sufficient in providing care to immigrants and the problems most faced in providing care were language barrier (95.3%), lack of personal hygiene (44.5%) and providing health education (38.6%). Nurses considered themselves competent just below intermediate level in communicating with immigrants. The solution methods nurses developed to these problems were translator (80.8%) to a great extent and body language (52.8%). The services nurses worked in, their experiences in providing care to immigrants and the states of experiencing difficulty in care were found to be significantly associated with nurses’ feeling competent in care. Conclusion: It was found that nurses experienced problems in knowing cultural practices of immigrants and communicating. It was seen that nurses who felt competent in communication were also more competent in providing care. Therefore, it can be recommended for nurses to receive training in providing care to individuals from different cultures. It is recommended to form professional teams in health institutions to communicate and maintain communication with immigrants.
