Background: To evaluate the development of rubeosis iridis after pars plana vitrectomy in patients with profferative diabetic retinopathy. Methods: We evaluated 103 eyes of 88 patients with diabetes who underwent pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) between January 2000 and September 2003, Indications for PPV, laser treatment, combined or sequential cataract surgery, usage of silicone oil and presence of postoperative retinal detachment were evaluated by logistic regression analysis. Results: Preoperative rubeosis ridis was present in 7 eyes (in 4 eyes it regressed postoperatively) and postoperatively in 13 eyes. Postoperative retinal detachment was found to be the only risk factor for rubeosis iridis after PPV (p=0.007), Conclusions: Postoperative retinal detachment is the risk factor for postoperative rubeosis iridis after PPV in diabetic patients, © EVRS.
