Worldwide, traffic deaths are approximately 1,000,000 per year and traffic accidents are the most common accident types. This study is aimed to investigate traffic accidents occurred in Samsun province for the period 1991-1995 and to define the factors cause accidents. Data were obtained from Traffic Authority of Samsun. From 1991 through 1995, the number and the cost of accidents increased from 1,031 to 3,168 and from 6,237,910,000 TL. to 118,249,450,000 TL. respectively, while the traffic accident-related death ratio decreased (from 6.5% to 1.8%). It was thought that increase of number and cost of accidents might be due to the increase of motor-vehicles in traffic and the decrease of traffic accident-related deaths might be due to the widening usage of safety bells. Suggestions through reducing the number and the cost of accidents discussed.
